I watched (in order of enjoyment): - Our Unwritten Seoul: So far, this show is my favorite K-drama of the year. Mi-ji and So-hu remain ridiculously cute. - Taskmaster UK: If this episode doesn't inspire several fanfictions, I don't know what will. The glorious quote in question"Please forgive me, daddy, I got your shoes all mucky."- Running Point: It's very cute! - Apple Cider Vinegar: I enjoy it, but at the same time, I can only stand it in limited doses. - Nine Perfect Strangers: Not sure I'll ever finish the newest episode.
I'm looking forward to rewatching 28 Days Later next week in preparation for 28 Years Later.
I watched The Survivors (Netflix), a 6-ep murder mystery thriller set in Tasmania and adapted from a novel by Jane Harper.
I also finally got around to finishing the current season of Love, Death and Robots, which I'd started watching when it dropped but then got distracted by other shows.
Also watched the finale of Race Across the World. As is usually the case with this show, I liked all the teams so didn't really matter to me who actually won.
The Canadian SciFi cable channel started rerunning season 1 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds -- probably to revive interest in anticipation of season 3 coming in July. I imagine season 2 will be shown as well. Anyway, I started rewatching that just because it's so good. Was somewhat miffed to learn this week that while renewed for a 5th season (season 4 is already filming here in Toronto), that will also be the last season and even worse, will be only 6 episodes long. WTF???
I also watched the first episode of The Glass Dome (Netflix), which is a Swedish mystery thriller. Enjoyed it but haven't been in the right headspace to deal with subtitles most evenings so haven't made any progress on that one. May try to get a few eps in over the weekend.
Also this week's ep of Murderbot. And baseball and tennis. Last Sunday's men's final at the French Open was one the most epic tennis matches ever. Brilliant stuff.
I'm not having a good time recently, so I've hardly managed to watch anything. I'm completely in love with Murderbot, however. It's been a while since I was this desperate for the next episode.
I also somehow managed to watch Sherlock & Daughter, possibly because I wasn't that invested in it. That helps sometimes. ^_^' It wasn't bad or anything, but the kind of low-stress show I needed. I kind of ended up shipping Holmes/Moriarty, which is a first for me.
And the last couple of days, I tried fighting with the ZDF app (seriously, the only app worse might be the ARD one) to watch some tropey new adult shows called Love Sucks (vampire falls in love with vampire hunter after she beats him up) and Crystal Wall (woman looking for the truth behind her dad's death works as bodyguard for spoiled rich heir after saving his life). I rarely watch shows in German, but honestly, kind of what I needed right now, even if I'm not sure I'd recommend either of them unreservedly.
Nothing too exciting this week. I caught up on Poker Face and Murderbot, so a double dose of John Cho ;) Actually, I really liked that the most recent episode of Poker Face was structured a little bit differently. Not all episodes need to follow the exact same format.
Watched a bit more of Mythic Quest, Buccaneers, Slow Horses, Your Friends and Neighbors and finished S2 of Pachinko. Thought it was just as strong as the first season and that ending definitely demands a next season.
Also am halfway through the Bono One-Man show on Apple+. My partner saw it going on and then asked me to stop and see the rest with him because he had to leave. It's a strong start for sure.
Finished off the Jeopardy Masters and did the usual catch up with Daily Show and Colbert, but otherwise it's been all Apple viewing this week. Also saw the Fountain of Youth movie with John Krazisnki and Natalie Portman. There were a few good moments but I found it very paint by numbers.
We've watched all of Department Q over the last week and a half. It's very good if you don't mind your lead detectives being completely asshole-with-a-heart-of-self-loathing. More violent than my usual fare (there is police violence and also torture of the victim), but compelling enough that we didn't consider stopping.
A couple of episodes of Turning Point: The Vietnam War (Netflix) because Turning Point: The Cold War was so good. This is fascinating -- great, unflinching explanation of the history, especially the politics around it.
The first episode of Stick with Owen Wilson, which I'm on the fence about, but we'll probably watch more.
The Doctor Who finale, which... I think I’m just not the right audience for RTD’s style of story-telling? I’m really going to miss Gatwa on my screen, though.
El Eternauta -- We have two and a bit episodes to go in the season. This is great, very creepy, beautifully made. Would recommend going in cold, without spoilers. (And for that matter, please don't tell me anything!!)
Also, Poker Face (but we're an ep or two behind), Murderbot, and we finished season 5 of The Expanse last night (a rewatch).
Enjoy! (And your talking about Our Unwritten Seoul reminded me that I need to get back to that, so thanks. :-) I haven't been watching any Kdramas lately, which is very weird for me.
There wasn't much on for me this week. Just a few weekly shows. So I binged a couple of recent but not new shows:
Bump - an Australian show about a teen pregnancy that evolved into a lovely show about family taking place over about 12-14 years.
The Split - a UK drama about a family of divorce lawyers and their relationships. Had Nicola Walker in it who is one of my fav UK actors so that was good.
This coming week is even worse tv-wise, I think there are only 5 episodes of shows to watch all week. yikes. Looking forward to The Buccaneers starting up again though.
The watchalong is now done with HPI, too, so I have nothing left. *sobs theatrically* Ah well, there's always fanfic. *g*
I tried the first few minutes of Dept Q, but I think it's too dark for me. I might try again at some later point.
I watched almost all of The Residence, thank y'all for the rec. It's not something I'd get fannish about, but the humor was very much up my alley and I enjoyed it. (Still have one ep left so don't know whodunnit yet. I have no doubt I will enjoy the resolution.)
Keeping up to date with Murderbot. I really enjoyed the latest ep (ep6). Great character development, good novel-divergent choices. It has been drifting farther and farther from the novel, but so far I don't mind the changes they've made. They're all in service of telling us more about Murderbot's character, and as such are very well done.
I also watched part of the first episode of Phineas and Ferb, the new season came out last week. I have never watched this in English before (only ever dubbed on TV), so that'll be a change I'll have to get used to.
I haven't read Murderbot, but I'm glad to hear that the changes work. The Expanse also did a great job of making the story fit into a TV show and it was still absolutely worth reading the books. Maybe I should do that here, as well.
1. Finished watching Dept Q on Netflix, Saturday. I now understand the mixed reviews it had been getting. The principal characters are engaging, and interesting. But the interesting mystery isn't the featured one. There's two mysteries. One is the "Cold Case" or "Lost File Case" and the other is the mysteries of how each of the four detectives got assigned to it, and why, and what happened to them previously to lead them there. The mysteries about the fours cops is the interesting one - and that hasn't really been solved by the end of the series. So the series has more than one mystery thread, and feels at times like the viewer has been dropped into the middle of the story and needs to spend some time playing catch up.
Also the principal mystery aka Cold Case is the typical sadistic case that haunts nightmares, and if you've watched a lot of these mysteries or read them, may have seen before? It also spends a lot of energy misleading the audience and detectives. I found the Cold Case to be depressing, rather dark, and frustrating at times. I was more interested in solving the shooting at the beginning of the series that started it off - which has not been resolved. [Note this seems to be true of most television mystery dramas - so it may just be something that annoys me and no one else, because they keep doing it. It must be working on some level.]
That said? It has engaging characters, and I wanted to know more about them. So I hope it gets a second season. No reason why it shouldn't - it did well enough on Netflix. But alas, it is on Netflix, and one never knows.
2. Winding my way through Buffy the Vampire Slayer, S2 on Hulu. S2 much like S1, and all television serials in the US, is a mixed bag. I remember liking "Becoming 1" (the second to last) episode better? I actually loved it way back in 1998, when I was 29. Now, I find it to be a bit on the cheesy side, with both Angel and Dru sliding into overacting territory, and theatricality. Amusingly enough, Spike has gone in the opposite direction, and is less theatrical. (Possibly because the actor was spending a lot of time watching Anthony Head on set, and trying to emulate him?) And some of the dialogue is on the cheesy side.
It's saving grace may be Gellar's performance, some the quippy one-liners, and Spike (the little we see of him).
Kendra was a bit of a mistake - they went a bit over the top in the Jamaican or Caribbean Slayer. I've decided that she's trying for Jamaican and failing at it. Good news? She's not on that long. She does not date well - and is the brunt of one too many of the jokes, most in poor taste. Also, Boreanze can't do an accent to save his life. And his homeless, pathetic Angel lurking and stalking teen Buffy in LA doesn't quite come across in the manner that I think the writers intended? And I didn't realize how much Buffy resembled Angelus's vampiric sire and paramour Darla until I saw those early scenes again. Kind of unsettling, as is Whistler, the guy who is popping in and out of Angel's life since the 1996, and attempting for unknown reasons to get Angel on the straight and narrow.
It does however have the money shot at the end or the oft-quoted scene - which is Whistler's voice over: "the big life changing moments are going to happen, there's nothing we can do about that, but it's what we choose to do after they come that matters, and tells us who we are."
The episode also does a good job of echoing the first episode of the season, where Buffy gets tricked into going somewhere else, while her friends are the real target. Angel was along for the ride the first go around, and uses that trick against her in this episode, and calls her on it. Buffy's biggest flaw - which Angel and various other villains exploit to their advantage - is her desire to take on the world all by herself, and protect people by leaving them safely behind. The series has a heavy theme - regarding how we can't do it by ourselves, we need other people, we need help. We can't do it alone.
3. The Tony's made me want to revisit Hamilton which is available on Disney +. I rewatched the first half of it - still holds up, just very long...
